Simsek arrived at Purdue as a full professor and head of the food science department in July from North Dakota State University. She is an innovative food biochemist, recognized nationally and internationally for her contributions to grain chemistry and carbohydrate science. Lesedi Mathibela, another leader, said issues important to learners were not taken into account by the school administration.

They had previously struggled to provide hot water to their hostels.

“Honestly, we feel neglected because if we are not monitoring the water situation, we are often served undercooked and poor quality food.

Learners said they felt angry because management repeatedly failed them, even though they tried to be understanding and patient.

“Whenever we try to raise issues, criminals easily enter the school and threaten us to stop this nonsense and we just don’t feel safe because we don’t even know how they get in.”

Gauteng Education Department spokesman Steve Mabona said they were aware of the disruption in schooling.

Mabona said the learners’ claims that the department was ignoring their needs were unfounded.

According to Mabona, after the learners’ protest earlier this year, the department took action and new geysers were installed while repairs were being made to existing facilities.

“Unfortunately, our interventions were in vain because vandalism, by the same learners, continues to be a threat.

“However, we have not received any reports of bullying of learners by anyone.

“We call on any learner or educator who has information on said allegation to make it known, so that it can be dealt with expeditiously, in accordance with the policies of the Dispute Management Unit,” added Mabona.

Across Australia, many of us are staying at home right now. While we can wait until the day when we can gather around a table and open a good bottle of wine, it could take some time.

In the meantime, you can try another approach to tasting wine at home: drinking a magnum over several days, as you would with canned wine.

A magnum is twice the size of a regular bottle, at 1.5 liters it holds about 16 glasses of wine.
