Discover Tamil Nadu’s centuries-old culinary traditions with seasonal tastes, Gurgaon

There is something about centuries-old culinary traditions that sets them apart from ordinary cuisine. These are dishes that we savored in our childhood and that are passed down from generation to generation, bringing to life the authentic flavors of the region that are difficult to reproduce. The ancient town of Tiruchirappalli is one such example which encompasses a huge range of delicious dishes. These traditional delicacies were brought to our palate by Seasonal Tastes in Westin, Sector 29 Gurgaon. The restaurant hosts a 13-day festival called ‘Trésors de Trichy’ which celebrates the culinary traditions of the historic town.

Chef Vijayakumar was the driving force behind this gastronomic feast with an elaborate but carefully thought out menu. The meal started with a Paruppu Malli Rasam infused with coriander and assorted spices. Then we tried various appetizers that whet our cravings for something spicy. There was the special Trichy Paneer, followed by a Vazhaipoo vadai made from banana blossoms and lentils. Both were crisp and different from anything we had tried before.

Among the non-vegetarian appetizers were the popular Mutton Sukka and Meen Kal Masala. The generous use of spices and an assortment of flavors in these dishes stole the show.

In the main course, we tried the Trichy Nei Kathrikai, which was Brinjal masala roasted with ghee. Using whole garlic cloves in the dish was an instant treat for the palate, and the flavors of the otherwise astringent condiment were surprisingly mellow. The Maravalli Masiyal or Mashed Tapioca had subtle tastes that complemented the spiciness of the other dishes well.

The gravy dishes were served with classic lemon rice cooked with special attention to detail. Freshly made Kaal Dosas and Parottas complimented the feast.

The sweet Semiyan Payasam and Rava Kesari ended our meal smoothly. So if you are looking to experiment with the ravishing food of Tamil Nadu, you know where you should be!
