In this cheerful new weekly show, the famous pastry chef and James beard Award finalist Paola Vélez, who is known as much for her meaningful social justice work as for her mouth-watering Instagram post and dance on TIC Tac, shows viewers how to make heartwarming pastries and desserts that celebrate his Dominican heritage and inspire fun culinary adventures in the kitchen.
With 13 episodes planned for its first season, Pastries with Paola broadcast in FOOD & WINE’s Instagram, Youtube, and Facebook chains, as well as on Foodandwine.com, which will also feature each of Paola’s recipes so that viewers can easily create her dishes at home. The first episode features Paola’s Maria Cookies Icebox Cake. Other recipes that will be highlighted in future episodes include Tres Leches Cornbread, Cherry Empanadillas, Lemon Sumac Pie with Ritz Cracker Crust, and Ultimate Chocolate Party Cake, among others.

Raised in the Dominican Republic and the Bronx, Paola grew up with access to almost every exotic fruit imaginable, which has led her to become an advocate for fair food and sustainability. She uses her time and resources to help her communities and the restaurants she works with make meaningful change. Pastry chef named James Beard Rising Star, Paola is the founder of La Bodega Bakery, executive pastry chef of Maydan and Compass Rose in Washington, DC, and co-founder of Bakers Against Racism. A Cordon Bleu graduate, Paola got her start in the culinary industry working with Jacques Torres, then worked with Christina tosi at the MilkBar. Subsequently, she held several positions at well-known DC restaurants, including pastry chef in Arroz, pastry chef at Iron Gate restaurant in the Neighborhood Restaurant Group and executive pastry chef at Kith / Kin.
