Parksville residents will soon see a new Quality Foods shopping sign along the Alberni Highway.

At a council meeting on May 3, the Town of Parksville Planning and Construction Director, Blaine Russell, notified council of an encroachment request and a derogation permit. fit-out for a stand-alone sign on a public boulevard adjacent to 371 Alberni Hwy, the Quality Foods location in Parksville.

According to Russell’s report on the derogation permit, the brand’s purpose is to advertise several commercial tenants in the mall. Since the location of the sign is not on private property, an exemption permit is required.

The new panel will be V-shaped, approximately 15 feet high, 12 feet wide and eight feet deep. It will be built with mostly metal and wood decor, with backlit lettering.

According to Russell’s report, with respect to vehicle visibility and utilities, the location was reviewed and accepted by the engineer responsible for the case.

The owner of the sign must maintain liability insurance and provide compensation to the City for the fair market value of the land, in accordance with the encroachment agreement. In his report, Russell said the 27-square-meter encroachment area appears to be worth $ 5,060.75, based on a 2021 property value assessment for 371 Alberni Highway.

During the meeting, Councilor Marilyn Wilson asked if the current Cascadia Liquor sign located on the opposite side of the property (next to Moilliet Street) would remain if the new sign was installed on the boulevard. She also asked if the city could break the deal, if it was necessary in the future.

Russell confirmed that, to his understanding, the city could end the deal if necessary. He also said that since the existing sign of Cascadia Liquor is not licensed by the city, it will need to be processed before issuing a permit for the new sign.

After the discussion period, council voted unanimously in favor of allowing the permit application and encroachment.

Notice will be mailed, or direct delivery, to owners and tenants of properties within 50 meters of the proposed location.
