The secret bar hidden at the back of a Gosforth grocery store

Coppers of Gosforth is well known among the locals. Whether it’s friendly service, good quality, reliable products, or an impressive selection of beers and wines, this is a corner store rightly held in high regard.

But could it be even better? Yes, was the categorical response from owner Andrew Cossey.

During the lockdown period when the store was forced to close, Andrew was busy expanding and building his beloved corner store.

He said, “When you stop, you go back. When you keep pushing you can get more and create something special.

Come in, Hop Secret. A charming and cozy place integrated into the back of the store, it exudes character and a warm atmosphere.

Stroll through the store, past the fresh fruit and veg on your way to the epic beer hall, and you are greeted by a curious row of taps on the back wall. There you go, you stumbled upon something from Hop Secret.

Continue further and the hallway ends with what looks like a refrigerator at first, but those doors open to reveal a gorgeous outdoor seating area, then two more adjoining rooms with more seating.

“You can come to the store for a pint of milk and walk away 4 hours later with a different pint,” Andrew joked.

In his pursuit of expansion, Andrew made sure to always collaborate with other local businesses. As such, Coppers deals with over 60 local businesses, including bakeries, restaurants and, of course, breweries.

“I’m very lucky, I have amazing people around us, I work with amazing companies and I just have amazing people all around,” Andrew exclaimed, “It’s amazing to be able to help the community around you, as much as they help you by coming inside. “

As well as being a bar gem, Hop Secret also offers food and regularly tests new items. A current collaborator is Chef Matei Baram of Posh Street Food.
