Karns Quality Foods moves into former Darrenkamp’s in Newberry Township

It’s taken a while, but residents of North York County are finally getting what they’ve been asking for…a Karns Quality Foods store.

The Mechanicsburg-based company will move into the Newberry Commons space vacated by Darrenkamp last fall, Andrea Karns, vice president of marketing and sales, announced Wednesday.

The store is expected to open in early 2020.

Karns received hundreds of messages, emails and phone calls the last time the store was vacant, more than five years ago.

“We often get messages like this when people would like to see us move into a store,” Andrea Karns said. “We knew there was space there, but the timing wasn’t right at the time. And then we got those same messages again this time.

And this go-around, the time has come for Karns to open its first store in York County.

Andrea Karns said the store will not require any structural changes, but will be updated internally. In addition to new shelving and checkout lanes, an 84-foot meat and seafood checkout will be built at the back of the store to accommodate the store’s butcher.

“Karns Foods is excited about the opportunity to join the York community,” President Scott Karns said in a press release. “Karns’ food team can’t wait to share our extensive meat and seafood aisles, in-store sausage offerings, fresh produce, local produce, and arguably the best whoopie pies in town!”

The Newberry Commons store joins those in Boiling Springs, Carlisle, Hershey, Lemoyne, Mechanicsburg, Middletown, New Bloomfield and Harrisburg.

Karns Quality Foods was opened in 1959 by David Karns and remains a family business known for its fresh meats and baked goods.

Darrenkamp’s closed three stores late last year and sold a fourth to Giant Food Stores, ending the family’s 86 years in the business.

The property, which previously housed a Super Fresh store, anchors Newberry Commons, just off the Valley Green exit of I-83 north in Newberry Township.
